BAER Test

My alarm went off at 4:00 am as it was supposed to and I hit it off. I sat up and leaned back closing my eyes for just a second. When I opened them again an hour had passed. We had 15 minutes to get out the door. I fed Inara and changed her and then changed Ronan. Inara went back to bed and we were out the door. We arrived just in time and then after all the rush we waited in the waiting room an hour.
They led us back to the prep room and Ronan got to ride in a car wagon. He enjoyed turning the stirring wheel and beating the horn. He was starting to act sleepy so I put him in his gown and rocked him. He fell asleep and the doctors came in to talk to us. They had decided he would stay under a six hour observation following the procedure. He would be taken up to the children's hospital which was three floors up.They took him back and then the real waiting began. We waited for about two and half hours. We got breakfast and then a round of coffee. Finally our family pager beeped indicating Ronan was ready to see us. The receptionist led us back to a very sleepy Ronan. I held him until the peds unit got a bed. All they had available was a shared room. This was the first time Ronan ever had a shared room. His room mate is around his age.
I walked down to the audiology department to get his results. His audiologist told me that his hearing is only slightly better. A year ago he was 80 decibels in his left and 50 decibels in his right. His results today were 70 in the left and 40 in the right. They are going to call me with the full detailed results later. They think that this shows his hearing loss will stay moderate. They don't think it will be progressive but we'll know more in a couple of years.
Now we are just waiting for them to release him which should be any minute now. After that I have to go to Biology class. We should be cutting it pretty close but I'm hoping I'll be able to feed Inara before I have to jet off.

Happy Birthday, Bunny Rabbit.

Today was an exciting day at our house, Bunny Rabbit turned seven years old. Xander spontaneously announced this event as he tromped down the stairs this morning. Bunny Rabbit is not the family pet; bunny rabbit is Xander's imaginary friend whose been his companion since Xander was two. You may remember the infamous Taloki who caused troubles and mischief wherever he ventured. Bunny Rabbit is a less troublesome character and instead of causing chaos he tends to disperse tid bits of wisdom that are heard through my four year old uttering thought provoking statements.Xander will say something far beyond his years and he'll give complete and total credit to Bunny Rabbit. Unlike Taloki, Bunny Rabbit usually argues that Xander stay out of trouble and do the right thing. He is a Jiminy Cricket of sorts. Seeing as he is a delightful imaginary friend we had a slight party for him. By slight I mean we took piece of left over birthday cake, put a candle on it and sang happy birthday. Xander held bunny rabbit in the palm of his hand so Bunny Rabbit could reach the cake. Xander told me the following "Bunny Rabbit is invisible and can only eat invisible cake and he told me I could eat his noninvisble cake."
Landon did not lose his tooth by today and this meant it had to be pulled. He went back by himself and chatted away at the nurse about all his birthday presents. I waited and read a magazine. I was through the first article when the dentist called "Landon's Mom". She told me he was pretty mad at her and asked me to stress what a brave boy he was. She told me the root on the tooth was huge. Landon came carrying out his tooth in a plastic container and I saw just what she meant. The root was almost twice the size of the tooth itself. In the picture below you can see how long it was. The black is not a cavity or decay it had black fuzz on it maybe the string they used to pull it.
For the afternoon Ronan had Endocrinology. He got his usually blood work for thyroid and CBC. All of his labs came back normal and he was able to stay on the same dose of medication. He had a rough blood draw and the lady stuck him three times before she got another nurse. This nurse was a grandmother of a child with Down Syndrome. By the way today is world Down Syndrome day. 3-21 is world Down Syndrome day because a person with Down Syndrome has 3 copies of their 21st chromosome. There was a celebration at Gigi's tonight but I had class so we couldn't attend.
Inara's new favorite game is so big. When you say "So Big" she gets the biggest smile and raises both hands in the air. I've decided she is saying hi now. Since she was four months old everytime someone would say hi it would sound just like she said "hi" back. I know she is saying it now because she'll say "hi" and wave when someone walks into the room.

Finger Recovery

Jadzia spent the day with mommy recovering. She was pretty sore when she woke up and we made use of the Tylenol with Codeine the ER doctor had prescribed for her. We cuddled on the couch and her cat the ER gave her and fairy doll from grandma were her constant companions. She got up to play and had her hand on the ground and Ronan sat on it which caused it to bleed slightly.
This caused the tears to flow all over again and the bandage needed changed. Around the same time the ER called to check on her and I asked them if I needed to remake the bandage with gauze since the 24 hour bandage requirement hadn't been fulfilled. The nurse told me I could put a band-aid on it with neosporin as long as the sticky didn't touch the stitches. Isaac ran out to the pharmacy and brought kid's neosporin and Tinkerbell band-aids. I was extra careful to ensure that the non-sticky part could cover the entire stitched area. She was much happier having the Tinkerbell bandaid over it instead of the gauze. Since the beginning she has thought her finger looked unsightly and kept trying to cover it when someone would remove a bandage. Last night while she was on the loopy medication she held her then unstitched finger in the air and proclaimed with a pout "It looks gross.". Today when the bandage had to be changed she saw her stitches for the first time and got worried. She thought her finger was very dirty and needed washed. For the evening Landon was itching to try out the clay he'd gotten at Chuck E. Cheese. He was nice enough to share with everyone. Xander and I teamed up. He made a rock and tree and I made a lady bug. Jadzia made an icecream cone with three scoops. Landon made a dragonfly and a bunch of snakes.
The day has been very relaxing and needed after the chaos of yesterday. We have a pretty busy week ahead and needed an easy day.

Crazy Party Day

My day summed up in one sentence entails a Chuck E Cheese birthday party, 3 hours of swimming and an ER visit. Now to detail all of that somehow in a single blog which is going to be rather long. The plan of the day was to have Landon's birthday at Chuck E Cheese thanks to my awesome parents who took care of everything for it and my mother in-law who brought everything else we needed. The plan was that swimming would follow the party. My in-law's had a booth at a gun show in our area and were staying at a hotel with a pool. The swimming would be followed by dinner at a restaurant and all these sequence of events lead up to the ER visit. We arrived at Chuck E Cheese 15 minutes early. We had a hostess who helped things run smoothly. We started with games and each child who attended got 20 tokens and Landon got 100. Ronan and Inara even rode some of the kiddie rides. Games went on for about an hour and half before everyone was called back to the table to eat and watch the party show.
Landon had a Batman cake and Chuck E Cheese came out to present Landon with a crown and watch him blow out his candles. Pizza and cake were done and Landon got to go into the ticket blaster machine to try and win as many tickets as he could grab. They had bigger tickets that were worth increments of 50, 100, and 200 tickets. Landon got about 500 from the machine plus the near 1000 he had already won. He cashed them in for a car, some clay and other various trinkets.

He opened presents and was pleased he'd gotten pretty much everything he asked for. We cleaned up the party with the help of our hostess. My mother in-law and I decided to take Landon to Toys R Us to spend the birthday money since it was less than a block away. He got two hot wheels trucks and a dinosaur monster truck. Toys R us was having a sale buy 2 get 1 free on hot wheels items. We met everyone back at the house. My mom was sitting with the babies during their nap so I could take the big kids to my in-laws hotel to swim. Isaac was meeting up with his dad at the gun show.At the hotel we got the kids in their swim gear and then Grandma Fullmer and I spent forever trying to inflate arm floaties, air tires and a beach ball. We made our way to the pool and let the kids splash around for about three hours. Xander got a little bold at one point and started bobbing a bit. He took his floaties off and stepped out too deep. I quickly grabbed him up and ordered him to get his arm floaties back on. Back in the hotel room the boys played with Landon's new birthday presents. We shared popcorn since we were all pretty hungry and dinner was a ways off. If we had only known then how delayed dinner actual would be we might have shoved a lot more popcorn down.
Isaac and his dad finished the gun show for the day and met us at the room. We had quite a few bags full of birthday toys and swim suits. I grabbed them all and Isaac reminded me I needed to switch car seats from my in-law's car to our car. My mother in-law offered to come with and help. Unable to contain the anticipation of restaurant pancakes for dinner the kids tagged along. I had piled all the bags in the car and hooked one car seat in. I returned to my mother in-laws car to grab Landon's as I was headed back to my car I hear My mother in-law yell and Jadzia begins wailing like I''ve never heard her before.
My mother in-law was telling me I needed to get over there. I dropped the car seat and ran around. Jadzia was pulling her right hand and blood was seeping everywhere. My mother in-law explained what happened. " I handed Xander his carseat and then shut the door. Jadzia's hand was right there and I didn't know it. I thought she had just hit her head and then I looked down and all four of her fingers were shut in the door." I was too skittish to look at the damage and asked my mother in-law to assess. She is a braver soul than I because she looked over Jadzia's hand and told me to call Isaac because her pointer finger definitely needed stitches.I called up to the room to tell Isaac what happened and that he needed to come down. Jadzia was still screaming hysterically at this point. I took a deep breath and looked at her finger it was bleeding profusely and my mother in-law found a napkin to apply pressure. The blood was in the way of seeing the true extent but it looked like a huge gash was hanging from the side of the finger tip. I called my mom to let her know we'd be longer getting back to the babies and then we bolted for the hospital. I held her finger on the way trying to apply pressure but the blood kept seeping through the Kleenexes. We were on about the tenth Kleenex by the time we had completed the ten minute ride.
I took her in and showed them the damage. They didn't even triage her and took her straight on back to the peds unit. She had stopped screaming but her face was sullen and her lip had a pout. One of the nurses brought her a stuffed cat, a book and stickers to keep thinking it would cheer her up but she just sat there sad. They put something on gauze and wrapped it around her finger to stop the bleeding and the bleeding slowed some. They x-rayed her hand to look for fractures which showed the bones in her hand were fine. They gave her some medicine that would make her sleepy and forget the trauma so they could numb her and get the stitches in.She was loopy and we knew the medicine began to work and she was giggling a bit. They put Tinkerbell in to further distract her. She sobbed when they gave her the numbing shots. Once the doctor was sure they were working she began to suture. She had to cut some on the finger because it was tore up quite a bit and this would allow for less stitches and it would heal fine. Total she got five stitches on her tiny finger. They sent her home on pain medication and home care instructions. She has to got back to her pediatrician in 10 days for removal of her stitches. Grandma Fullmer gave Jadzia money to get a new doll to help her feel better.

It was getting late but the kids had been promised pancakes and the ER doctor gave the ok for Jadzia to go if she felt up to it and she did. Each of the kids got a huge stack of chocolate chip pancakes and us very hungry adults enjoyed finally being able to eat. We went to fill Jadzia's prescription and while there we got her a fairy doll. She told me she wanted a Tinkerbell barbie but she already has one so we got her one of the other fairies to go with Tinkerbell.I had her in bed but she woke up crying so her and I are on the couch together tonight. This has been a very long day. Because of all the meds and everything going on Jadzia won't be going to church tomorrow and I think we'll rest up. Monday my school starts up again and I have a week of appointments. I'm not sure how my spring break has seemingly vanished.

Table Comedian

Isaac and I are going on a date so this blog may be greatly condensed or I'll have to finish when we get back. I should start by saying today Isaac has once again proven how gullible I am when it comes to what he says to me. He bought us a new kitchen table last night from an estate sale. He only paid $20 for it and it was real wood and solid. He told me it was so cheap because the couple who owned it had died in a gas leak and their dog died on top of the table. He told me the dog was on there for three weeks before he was found. He had me completely convinced this was true and I was really grossed out and unsure if we should keep the table. We had scrubbed it down really well and I had thoroughly sanitized it with bleach but was still unsure. I might add there were a few claw marks on top so it was completely believable an animal had been on the table at one point. After me overly scrubbing this table and mulling it over for the day we were sitting on the couch and he smiled at me. He said " you know a dog didn't really die on that table right?" I should have known because Isaac has a phobia of germs and would not bring a table a dog had stayed dead on for three weeks. He was pretty proud of his joke and I'm sure this will be brought up for years to come.
Besides Isaac's comedic table act the day was pretty uneventful. In the evening we went to my brother's house to celebrate his birthday. We had dinner then cake. Tomorrow is Landon's party and the kids are a buzz with anticipation. I'm off for date night with my ornery husband.

Xander's Tests

At 5:30 this morning I was up feeding and changing the babies. I got Xander up at 6:00 and Isaac up at 6:10. My dad was going to sit with the other four so Isaac could accompany me. Xander was sad that he couldn't eat breakfast and he also wanted to know why I woke him in the middle of the night. I told him it was morning but he refused to believe me since the sun wasn't even so much as peaking over the horizon.
Isaac stopped on the way to get me a cappuccino to help my non morning person self. We checked in 15 minutes early and were taken back almost immediately. Xander had his abdominal ultrasound first. He giggled through the whole thing because it tickled him and he thought it was cool to see his insides on the monitor.
We were taken directly to a radiology waiting room following the ultrasound. Xander played with the bead toy one of which is available in nearly every medical facility. A childlife specialist and her intern came and got us. Their job was to explain the upper GI procedure to Xander. The specialist had a model of the machine and demonstrated with a doll what would occur. She also let Xander pick out what flavor barium drink he wanted and he chose Strawberry. She also told him if he was good he would get to choose a prize from the treasure box. Before they left they gave Xander a sticker and a St. Patrick's day craft.
While the specialists were getting things set up in the other room Isaac read a story to Xander. The book they had grabbed had a character by the name of Alexander in it. Before the book was complete the ladies were back and ready for Xander. They had him change into a blue hospital gown and let him help to stir the strawberry syrup into his drink. The technician remembered Ronan when she saw me. She asked me how Ronan was doing which was not surprising seeing as Ronan has had ten or more procedures done there in the 21 months he's been alive. Ronan is well remembered at the hospitals and doctors' offices around the area.
Xander liked the fact that once he stood up on the bottom of the machine it tipped him back and he had a fun ride. He obeyed all the instructions the doctor gave him and drank like a pro despite the fact he said it tasted bad. When it was done the technician was going to help him off the table but he wanted the machine to rotate back to standing so he could ride again. They let him get dressed again and lead him back to the treasure box.The treasure box was full of lots of fun toys. There was neat farm book set complete with a story CD and I pointed it out to Xander. He preferred the sand toys and this should have been expected because he loves going to the beach. All of his procedures were complete so we went home. When we arrived grandpa was feeding a content Inara.
Landon was excited because his Great Grandma and Grandpa Chandler sent him a car birthday card and ten dollars. He wants to go shopping tonight but the likelihood of that is slim. Plus teaching the virtue of patience isn't a bad concept either.
